Doyle Engineering, Inc., established in October 1979, (formerly Joseph M. Doyle and Associates, established in 1949) was expanded under the new firm name of DEI Electrical Consultants, Inc. in March, 1994.
Stephen H. Helms, P.E. is the President of the firm. DEI provides complete engineering services ‑‑ preliminary investigation, feasibility surveys, load and energy studies, project design, security systems, lighting design, control systems design, construction drawings, specifications, inspections and ongoing consultation on completed projects.
The firm’s experience extends beyond Washington, all over the northwest, having completed
or presently designing projects in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii and California.
WHO WE ARE…
DEI presently utilizes numerous software applications to stay at the leading edge of industry design and production. DEI uses current release of AutoCAD for general drafting applications for general drafting applications, with additional tools, such as database driven design integration between CAD drawings and electrical calculations. DEI is also fluent in Building Information Modeling (BIM), and utilizes both current and previous versions of Revit MEP as the primary tool for projects that require this level or virtual coordination. DEI also has dedicated lighting designers that utilize the industry leading software, AGI32, for lighting design, day-lighting analysis, and 3D photo-realistic renderings. The firm also uses various other appropriate software applications for energy calculations, heat loss calculations, life cycle costs, fault current calculations, load flow studies, cost estimates, and various other applications.
The firm has a permanent staff of fifteen, including three licensed Professional Electrical Engineers (Stephen H. Helms, Kelly Waterman, and Dale Wachholz), seven Electrical Designers, three CAD/Revit Technicians, a Construction Manager, and an Office Manager. One of our electrical designers is RCDD Certified, and one of our Engineers is a LEED Accredited Professional and experienced lighting designer. The electrical designers are all very well rounded, but many also have specialties, ranging from security electronics, power distribution, lighting and controls design, and audio visual systems. This diversity in specialties allows DEI to take a team approach on many large projects in order to make sure the best person is utilized for each task.
The firm’s reputation for quality, on‑time completion of projects, and accuracy of cost estimates is shown by the fact that over 95% of our work is engineered for clients with whom we have had previous commissions. Some clients have been doing business with the firm for over thirty years.

DEI has always strived to design and practice excellent engineering, and continues to stay current with the latest codes and green building design guidelines, such as LEED. A LEED Accredited Professional is available to participate in most all of DEI’s major projects.

that continuing education and shared experience is the best way to incorporate quality and longevity into technological design. Engineering and product seminars are routinely attended by our staff. Weekly in-house meetings allow engineering experience to be passed on to all designers.
We have a combined 200+ years of experience in power distribution, lighting, computer networking, telephone, fiber optic, sound, security and fire alarm design. Education and knowledge provide the expertise to specify sustainable technology systems.

The projects include all phases of electrical design, including: power distribution, secondary distribution, motor control centers, interior and exterior lighting and controls design, special systems such as fire alarm and security systems, data communication and networking, clocks and communication, as well as load and energy surveys and feasibility studies. We provide cost estimates and specifications to go with each set of drawings, and furnish on‑going consultation and contract administration throughout the entirety of the project, including review of submittals and O&M manuals, final inspections, and project close-out. DEI takes pride in their willingness to participate in any design or construction issues that arise during the course of a project. DEI is also very proud of the quality control measures that they take, which include other designers checking the work of their peers.
